Hydropower Industry Congratulates Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm
Washington, D.C. (February 25, 2021) – Malcolm Woolf, President and CEO of the National Hydropower Association (NHA), today issued the following statement on the Senate confirmation of former Gov. Jennifer Granholm as U.S. Secretary of Energy.
“Secretary Granholm is uniquely qualified to advance the Biden Administration’s climate and clean energy goals. As the former Governor of Michigan, which has one of the largest pumped storage hydropower plants in the world, she recognizes hydropower is an essential part of any climate solution. The hydropower industry looks forward to working with the Secretary on a number of opportunities to bolster hydropower’s ability to decarbonize America’s grid.
“Hydropower is America’s first renewable energy source. In addition to providing carbon-free electricity to roughly 30 million Americans, both conventional hydropower and pumped storage are force multipliers by providing flexible generation to integrate greater amounts of variable wind and solar onto the grid.
“Secretary Granholm’s high public profile provides adds gravitas to the all-star roster that the Biden Administration has already assembled to address the climate crisis. The hydropower industry looks forward to strengthening its partnership with the Energy Department to promote clean, reliable and affordable electricity to power the nation’s economic recovery.”
