Path to Clean Energy Presents: Recognizing Pumped Storage Hydropower on World Energy Storage Day

September 22nd Virtual

FREE VIRTUAL EVENT: Join us on September 22, at 2:00 PM EDT for NHA’s Path to Clean Energy Virtual Event, “Recognizing Pumped Storage Hydropower on World Energy Storage Day”.

In recognition of World Energy Storage Day, September 22, the National Hydropower Association (NHA) will be shining a spotlight on pumped storage, which it vital to accelerating the U.S.’s efforts to decarbonize.

The rapid evolution of the U.S. electricity grid to meet ambitious clean energy goals has put a premium on long-duration energy storage resources. While batteries, flywheel and other storage technologies are growing exponentially year-over-year, none provide the grid reliability and resiliency benefits of America’s largest source of grid-scale storage: pumped storage hydropower.

In recognition of World Energy Storage Day, September 22, the National Hydropower Association (NHA) will be shining a spotlight on pumped storage, which it vital to accelerating the U.S.’s efforts to decarbonize. Pumped storage enables greater integration of wind and solar resources into the electricity grid by reducing the curtailments of excess variable renewable generation.

Join us on September 22, at 2:00 PM EDT for NHA’s Path to Clean Energy Virtual Event, “Recognizing Pumped Storage Hydropower on World Energy Storage Day”. The virtual event will feature a discussion with Jennifer Garson, Acting Director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office.

The event will also showcase a panel discussion on NHA’s 2021 Pumped Storage Report, which will be released on World Energy Storage Day. Panelist include: Preston Pierce, General Manager, Duke Energy; Amelie Pedersen – Manager, Investment Team, CIP Investments; Deb Mursch, Director Business Development, GE Renewable Energy; and Michael Manwaring, Executive Vice President, McMillen Jacobs Associates.

As a comprehensive follow-up to our 2018 report, NHA’s new 2021 report will focuses on energy markets, energy storage policy, development opportunities and challenges, and technological advancements; and provides recommendations to unlock the full value of this long-duration renewable storage resource.

Without question, energy storage technologies, like pumped storage, are poised to form the foundation of tomorrow’s carbon-free electricity.
